Marktown East Chicago

Marktown is an urban planned worker community in East Chicago, Indiana, United States, built during the Progressive Era in 1917 from marshland to provide a complete community for workers at The Mark Manufacturing Company. The Marktown Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

BP has been buying homes around the former Standard Oil Refinery since it was acquired in 1998. The London-based oil giant has bought a total of 51 properties and started razing swaths of homes in Marktown in 2013.
